Anaesthetic

 

Anaesthetic may be classified as follows:

 

a)

General anaesthetic: the initiation by a doctor of an agent intended to produce unconsciousness.

b)

Local or regional anaesthetic: the production of numbness at a range of sites by the introduction of local anaesthetic agents.

 

Local anaesthetic performed in association with the processes of labour and delivery will be one of the following:

 

a)

Epidural or caudal anaesthetic: the injection of a local anaesthetic agent into the Epidural space.

b)

Spinal anaesthetic: the injection of a local anaesthetic agent into the subarachnoid space.
