Anaesthetic may be classified as follows:

General anaesthetic: the initiation by a doctor of an agent intended to produce unconsciousness. |

Local or regional anaesthetic: the production of numbness at a range of sites by the introduction of local anaesthetic agents. |
Local anaesthetic performed in association with the processes of labour and delivery will be one of the following:
a) |
Epidural or caudal anaesthetic: the injection of a local anaesthetic agent into the Epidural space. |
b) |
Spinal anaesthetic: the injection of a local anaesthetic agent into the subarachnoid space. |
