Change History

DSCN 30/01 (W)

Data Standards: The implementation of new codes for Source of Admission and Discharge Destination to indicate admissions from and discharges to hospital providers in the same Trust. In line with the new definitions for Provider (Trust) Spell, Hospital Site Spell and Discharge

The total continuous stay of a patient using a bed on premises controlled by one health care provider during which medical care is the responsibility of one or more consultants or the patient is receiving nursing care under a nursing episode in a ward. In the latter case medical care is the responsibility of the patient’s own GP.

Notes:

1.  Each admission generates a hospital provider spell.

2.  Time spent as a lodged patient before transfer to a ward is included in the hospital provider spell.

3.  Each hospital provider spell ends with a discharge.

4.  Each admission as part of a series of regular day/night admissions generates a separate hospital provider spell.

5.  In some circumstances a patient may take home leave which does not interrupt the hospital provider spell.
