DSCN 09/05 (W)

Record Type – Regular Day/Night Admissions

Details are submitted to APC ds99 of all finished consultant episodes, complete or incomplete i.e. whether or not full clinical and contract details are available. In addition to details of consultant episodes, other patient records may also be submitted.

Records submitted to APC ds99 are classified as follows:

a)

General episode: a consultant episode in any specialty, including psychiatric and obstetrics, except where there has been a Registered birth (whether this occurs in hospital or prior to admission of the mother and/or baby on the way to hospital).

Notes:

1.   Includes all maternity cases discharged undelivered and all postnatal episodes (except where a baby is born on the way to hospital - see above).

2.   A separate episode should be generated for each attendance of a regular day/night admission.

b)

Birth episode: a consultant episode for a baby which starts with the Registered birth (including stillbirth) of the baby. Such episodes are appropriate to:

1.       Births in NHS hospitals.

2.       Births in non-NHS sites under contractual arrangements.

3.       Births outside hospital.*

* Does not include intended births at home. In this case the baby is an emergency admission.

NB: Any subsequent episodes within the provider spell are not birth episodes.

c)

Delivery episode: a consultant episode for a mother during which a Registered birth takes place. Appropriate to the same birth types as a birth episode.

d)

Other maternity events: delivery and birth events not covered above i.e. births at home (where home birth was intended) and births in non-NHS hospitals not covered by contractual arrangements. These events do not constitute consultant episodes and therefore have a limited data set consisting of mother and babies' details and details of the delivery and birth.

There are two separate record types for such events:-

i. Other delivery records: for mother's details

ii. Other birth records: for baby's details

NB: Submission of this data is not mandatory at present

e)

Psychiatric census record: a submission to the psychiatric census. The psychiatric census is a census of all psychiatric patients i.e. all patients, not yet discharged from a hospital provider spell on 31st March, who have been under the care of consultants in mental handicap (specialty 700) or in mental illness specialties (710 - 715) for the majority of the hospital provider spell to the date of the census. Includes patients who meet these criteria but at the time of the census are under the care of a non-psychiatric consultant.
