A Clinician's assessment as to whether the patient meets the BAEM Standards for Accident and Emergency Department Attendances determined by asking the following question:
In your clinical opinion does this patient meet the BAEM Standards for an Accident and Emergency Department?
BAEM Standards: -
• Trauma, usually within 2 days of injury
• Pain, unrelieved by simple analgesia
• Acute illness
• Respiratory distress
• Change in mental status, including alteration of consciousness and acute confusional state
• Patients brought to hospital by the police, normally excluding patients detained under section 136 of the Mental Health Act
• Patients brought to hospital by emergency ambulance
• Patients appropriately referred by any other health care professional
Please note that this question only needs to be answered for New Attendances and Unplanned Follow-ups; For Follow-up patients, value '03 – Not Applicable' should be recorded in this field.
