PART A - Admissions to hospital: patients detained under the Mental Health Act 1983 and informal admissions
This counts all psychiatric admissions to the hospital during the reporting period by their legal status when admitted and gender; it includes patients who have been admitted and subsequently discharged as well as patients who are still in hospital. It includes admissions under the following sections of MHA 1983. Where it says Section 37/41 etc, it means Section 37 with Section 41 restrictions.

PART B – Changes in legal status under the Mental Health Act 1983
This records the number of changes in MHA legal status of admitted psychiatric patients which occur during the reporting period. This includes changes from informal (or voluntary) status to formally detained, and vice versa. It includes changes FROM the following legal statuses and sections of the MHA (prior to change).

PART C – Use of supervised community treatment (SCT) (under section 17A Mental Health Act 1983)
Table C1 records the legal status prior to Supervised Community Treatment (SCT) for those discharged from hospital by gender, and includes the following legal statuses prior to SCT:

Table C2 refers to Supervised Community Treatment (SCT) related activity and records all uses of SCT, including recall from SCT into hospital, revocation of the community treatment order (CTO) and discharge of the CTO broken down by gender. It includes the following SCT related activity:

− Discharge of community treatment order
− Assignment to the hospital of an SCT patient

PART D – Use of section 135(1) and 136 of the Mental Health Act 1983
This part records the results of the use of section 135(1) and section 136 of the MHA 1983; only where the place of safety that the assessment was carried out at, was a hospital.
Table D1 records the number of completed MHA assessments under section 135(1) and 136 at the reporting hospital, by gender and whether:
− First PoS detention was the reporting hospital (and assessment carried out at the reporting hospital)
− Subsequent PoS detention was the reporting hospital (patient transferred from another hospital, but assessment carried out at the reporting hospital)
− Subsequent PoS detention was the reporting hospital (patient transferred from police station, but assessment carried out at the reporting hospital)
− Subsequent PoS detention was the reporting hospital (patient transferred from another place not included above, but assessment carried out at the reporting hospital)
Table D2 refers to outcomes of assessments carried out in the reporting hospital for those under section 135(1) and 136, for the following outcomes.
