Purulent discharge, whether or not organisms can be cultured from the purulent material. These should be monitored and identified at the relevant outpatient follow-up clinics which are normally undertaken within 6-8 weeks of the operation. Such infections will normally have been evident during the hospital stay or caused the patient to consult their GP. If patients report an infection then a complete history of the event should be taken for validation.
