A Clinician's assessment as to whether the patient meets the BAEM Standards for Accident and Emergency Department Attendances determined by asking the following question:
In your clinical opinion does this patient meet the BAEM Standards for an Accident and Emergency Department?
BAEM Standards: -
•Trauma, usually within 2 days of injury
•Pain, unrelieved by simple analgesia
•Acute illness
•Respiratory distress
•Change in mental status, including alteration of consciousness and acute confusional state
•Patients brought to hospital by the police, normally excluding patients detained under section 136 of the Mental Health Act
•Patients brought to hospital by emergency ambulance
•Patients appropriately referred by any other health care professional
Please note that this question only needs to be answered for New Attendances and Unplanned Follow-ups; For Follow-up patients, value '03 – Not Applicable' should be recorded in this field.
