A classification derived from data about the type of request, the category of patient or sample and the type of location, the exact groupings being dependent upon the context of the information.
NB: Each request should be classified by the clinical team (including GPs) responsible for initiating it.
The broad categories are as follows:
a) |
NHS patients: requests in respect of patients, including amenity patients and overseas visitors from a country with a reciprocal arrangement with the UK (charged under Section 121 of the NHS Act 1977, as amended by Sections 7(12) and 7(14) of the Health and Medicine Act 1988): |

(i) from hospital facilities: A. NHS facilities B. a non-NHS institution - where the NHS patient is treated under contractual arrangements as authorised under Section 23(1) of the NHS Act 1977. |

(ii) from general practice. |

Further sub-divided if required as: |
|
(i) Base site: inpatients. Includes: A. All post mortem work (including body handling), post mortem histology and work associated with post mortems from all hospitals (irrespective of location) -unless for HM Coroner, see Category II below B. All other pathology work carried out in respect of inpatients, day cases or A&E patients for the designated base site. |

(ii) Base site: out-patients. All work carried out in respect of out-patients (including day care patients) for the designated base site. |
|
(iii) Other hospitals: work carried out for all other hospitals served from the base site, irrespective of location, other than work associated with post mortems. |

(iv) General practitioners: work carried out for all general practitioners, irrespective of location. |
b) |
Private patients: requests in respect of patients using accommodation and services under section 65 and/or 66 of the NHS act of 1977. |
c) |
Non-NHS institution: requests in respect of patients in non-NHS institutions when a local health board is providing a service, under a contractual arrangement, to the institution in accord with Section 58 of the NHS Act 1977. |
d) |
Category ll request: received as a result of work undertaken by hospital doctors within the scope of category II of the schedule to paragraph 37 of the Terms and Conditions of Hospital Medical and Dental Staff. Such requests arise from examinations and reports on prospective emigrants, for insurance and legal purposes and on behalf of the Employment Medical Advisory Service. |
e) |
Other requests: requests in respect of other human sources from an NHS facility or a non-NHS institution (as specified at c above). Includes requests arising from for example, investigations carried out to ensure the maintenance of public health within a hospital or the health surveillance of hospital workers. |
