For out-patient consultations: after dividing GP referral letters into urgent and non-urgent, they are filed in date order and the patient will only receive a date for their consultation when the clinic list is made up (say one week in advance).
For inpatient admissions: record cards are kept on file in date order from which a selection is made regularly; only then is the patient informed of the date of admission.
